Many small businesses are barely surviving right now.

Behind the public curtain, you never really know what's going on.

Then you hear things like the recent announcement from The Wonderland Cafe.

Dearest guests, we regret to inform you that we will be closing our doors at the end of this month, due to economic conditions. Come out while you can and get your favorites! We look forward to serving you, thank you for your support!Plans are already under way for a new business to move in. Please do not solicit us on renting the space.

The Wonderland Cafe

I first saw the post in Deb Bruin's group for Cranky Veteran Candle Company. She had this to say...

I know that many of you aren’t local to us, but I’m sharing this post because this is reality for a huge chunk of small business owners right now. This is one of my favorite brunch spots in town and they are closing at the end of July. We are all struggling and none of us know how long we can sustain this. Please please please spend your money with small businesses first. It’s how we pay our bills, purchase school supplies, buy groceries. It’s how we make our life work. We all NEED you.

Deb Bruin; Cranky Veteran Candle Company

And she's SO right.

Many businesses are a matter of weeks away - some even days - from closing their doors if something goes sideways, or even if a slight decline in revenue happens.

So if you're going to go out and spend money anyway, and you have the option to, "invest" that money where it matters most - the people who work, live and play HERE, in Clarksville.

It goes beyond just the brick and mortar too. SO MANY folks within Clarksville have started businesses over the past couple of years. Many are online, e-commerce businesses. They matter too. They spend the money they make right here in OUR local economy.

The local money cycle is so important!

Being in digital media and online publishing, I see it and feel it too. It's "more comforting" to advertise with the established corporation rather than "the little guy". Like how it may feel more comfortable to eat at a chain restaurant than the mom-and-pop eatery.

Truly supporting a local economy takes intention and sacrifice. It may cost a bit extra to support that family restaurant, in both time and money. To me, that's worth it.

It's up to us, y'all.

We can go hyper-local and THRIVE while the nation struggles, OR we can continue to choose what's easier and requires less of us and watch our local economy continue to suffer while strengthening fat-cat corporations that don't live, work or play here.

[steps up on soapbox]

For example... If I've already made the decision to buy candles for the house or as a gift, I will choose to buy them from Blue Arrow & Co, Cranky Veteran, or another local candle maker rather than something "cheap and convenient" at Walmart or Target.

Another good personal example...

I'm gearing up to advertise this newsletter.

Now, I'm an Ad Buyer. I know how to advertise across social media and Google.

But INSTEAD of doing that, which would be easier and take less effort (and prolly less money), I've decided to take the time to reach out to local Facebook Groups and local businesses who have active pages on social to ask about paying for "sponsored" posts promoting the newsletter.

For no other reason than to SOW BACK INTO THE COMMUNITY I live in.

Talk about easy "free" money for the businesses who are DTP. (down to promote)

I'd MUCH rather my money go to a local Clarksville business for helping me promote than into the pockets of "Meta" or Google.

That's what I call a "feel good" decision.

Regardless of anything else, it feels good.

And that's how I'd hope to be treated, so that's what I do.

🙏🏽 just a reminder... if you see a friend or colleague mentioned in the newsletter, please forward it to them or share the link with 'em so they know and can feel appreciated - thanks!
